A 40-year-old Hobbema man is dead following a multi-vehicle collision four km north of Ponoka on Hwy 2A on Tuesday morning.

Ponoka RCMP say around 9:55 a.m. a pickup truck crossed the centre line and collided with a semi-trailer truck, causing the pickup truck to spin and strike a van. The semi and its trailer hit the ditch and the embankment of a railway track.

The driver and lone occupant of the pickup truck was ejected from the vehicle and died on scene. The drivers of the van and semi-truck were not injured and were the only occupants of their vehicles.

Motorists were rerouted around a section of Hwy 2A for four hours while investigators and emergency services crews were on scene. A crew with Canadian Pacific Railway attended and assessed railway infrastructure as a precaution with minor railway delays.

The collision is still under investigation. Police have not identified the man who died.
