EDMONTON — An investigation is underway into a possible hate crime in Edmonton after a man alleges he was the target of homophobic slurs just before an assault.
Chevi Rabbitt says three men in a car approached him and called him names as he was walking alone near the University of Alberta main campus last Thursday
Rabbitt says it was the second time that week he had been the target of the men’s slurs, but this time he alleges one of them got out of the car and grabbed him from behind.
He says he was put in a headlock and thrown to the ground before his cellphone was stolen and his attackers drove away.
Rabbitt says he couldn’t believe what happened to him, but he’s been receiving a number of supportive messages since the incident.
No arrests have been made.
