TORONTO — Police in Hong Kong are investigating the disappearance of a student from Newfoundland and Labrador.

A spokesperson for the Regional Missing Persons Unit of Kowloon West told The Canadian Press by telephone Monday that Joseph Basha disappeared Dec. 21.

The official, who requested anonymity, refused to disclose further details saying the investigation was at its preliminary stages.

A missing person’s notice posted online by his friends says the 25-year-old was last seen wearing a black jacket, dark-coloured shirt and jeans.

Media reports say Basha, also known as Joey, has lived in Hong Kong since 2008. The native of St. John’s was studying international and public affairs at the University of Hong Kong.

Basha was also the lead singer of the band Milkteeth.

“Hi all, Joey’s been missing for almost a week now, so any info about Joey Basha let us know... LET’S HOPE OUR FRIEND IS SAFE!!!,” Milkteeth said in a Facebook posting.
