Hoopsters thrashed royally

It was a tough night for the RDC basketball squads at Mount Royal University Friday, but neither coach was all that upset.

CALGARY — It was a tough night for the RDC basketball squads at Mount Royal University Friday, but neither coach was all that upset.

The Kings, who are missing four of their top eight players, dropped a 93-67 decision to the Cougars in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference play while the Queens lost 85-59.

“We’re missing a lot of our top guys, leaving us with just nine players,” said Kings head coach Clayton Pottinger, who was without Kek Biel and RJ Wells from the starting five.

“There were some guys who usually don’t play much, played a lot. In fact we used everyone, which gave them a lot of experience. There’s going to be games down the road where we’ll need them and this will help.”

Eric Bakker led the Kings with 21 points while Jacob Cusumano had 18 points and seven rebounds.

The Queens trailed by seven at the half to the seventh-ranked team in the country, who managed to pull away midway through the third quarter. “Overall I was pleased with the girls,” said Queens head coach Dawn Smyth.

“If you look at where we were early in the season against this team to where we are now we’ve come a long way. I know the score doesn’t show it, but Mount Royal is loading up to enter the CIS next season and have a couple of kids who played CIS before.”

Erin Wiersma had a strong game, dropping in 18 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Karlen Majcher added 12 points and four boards.

“We actually out rebounded them and shot 74 per cent from the free throw line and 37 per cent from the field.”

The RDC teams are now off until the New Year.

Queens hockey

The SAIT Trojans took advantage of a late power play to down the Queens 3-2 in overtime at SAIT Friday.

Stacey Duncan and Rachael Hoppins scored for the Queens who led 2-0 after the first period. Justine Cantley and Alex Deeg scored for SAIT in the middle stanza.

The Queens finished with 31 shots on Tehnille Gard while Ross made 19 saves.
