Hostage situation ends peacefully

A reported hostage situation near Rimbey on Thursday evening ended peacefully when an intoxicated man surrendered to Rimbey RCMP.Police were called to a residence west of Rimbey at about 8 p.m. on Thursday to a report of a hostage situation and an allegation that firearms were involved.

Police were called to a residence west of Rimbey at about 8 p.m. on Thursday to a report of a hostage situation and an allegation that firearms were involved.

Rimbey RCMP attended and were later joined by Red Deer, Ponoka and Sylvan Lake RCMP and Hwy 2 highway patrol.

By 10:30 p.m., the occupant, who police said was intoxicated, had surrendered and was taken into custody. No one was injured.

Subsequent police investigation of the house found firearms but no hostages.

Rimbey RCMP did not disclose the name of the person, but said it was a male in his 50s from the Rimbey area. He remains in custody pending firearms charges.
