Humane Society says it will look into fresh complaint about Edmonton elephant

The Edmonton Humane Society says it will investigate a complaint by animal welfare groups about the treatment of Lucy, the lone elephant at the city’s Valley Zoo.

EDMONTON — The Edmonton Humane Society says it will investigate a complaint by animal welfare groups about the treatment of Lucy, the lone elephant at the city’s Valley Zoo.

The groups made a formal report to the society after losing their court bid to have the animal moved to a U.S. sanctuary.

Humane Society spokeswoman Shawna Randolph says a previous complaint about Lucy’s health was made it 2007 and an investigation determined everything was OK.

She says the society also does yearly checks on the health of animals at the zoo.

Still, Randolph says an investigator will be assigned to the latest complaint.

Earlier this year, a judge told animal rights groups that any complaint about the treatment of Lucy must go through the proper channels — one of those being a report to the Humane Society.
