EDMONTON — A Hutterite colony in southwestern Alberta has been fined for having an illegal liquid manure lagoon.

A provincial court judge ordered the White Lake colony near Blairmore to pay $71,500 for building and operating the earthen lagoon without a permit.

The manure is generated by a hog farm owned by the Hutterites and regulated by the Natural Resources Conservation Board.

The fine was agreed to by both sides after the colony pleaded guilty.

A provincial court judge also placed the colony on probation for three years, and ordered that no manure be allowed to enter the lagoon unless approved by the conservation board.
