ST. JOHN’S, N.L. — It will be Tuesday night before power is restored to all the customers in northeastern Newfoundland who lost their electricity in an ice storm that hit the region on Friday.

About 7,000 customers remained without power on Sunday after the storm brought down power lines and poles.

Newfoundland Power spokeswoman Michele Coughlan said about 1,000 customers have had their power restored since the storm first hit the region and continued over the weekend with high winds.

The power company set up a portable generating system on Sunday evening to give some customers without power access to electricity on a rotating basis.

Coughlan said 250 lines and transmission structures were damaged by the ice, which is more than earlier reported because of continued damage caused by the wind.

“We did continue to see further damage to our electricity system,” she said. Ice as thick as 12 centimetres coated power lines.

Power wasn’t expected to be fully restored in Conception Bay North until late Monday and until Tuesday evening on the Bonavista Peninsula.

Emergency teams from the Red Cross set up temporary shelters for anyone that needs them. They will remain in operation until the power is fully restored.

All available work crews were on the job over the weekend supplemented by workers from Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro.
