Imperial Oil reviewing security

The chief executive of Imperial Oil Ltd. (TSX:IMO) says the company is looking at security after several high-profile occupations of Alberta oilsands projects by environmentalists.

CALGARY — The chief executive of Imperial Oil Ltd. (TSX:IMO) says the company is looking at security after several high-profile occupations of Alberta oilsands projects by environmentalists.

Bruce March says Greenpeace protesters who took over a Shell plant near Edmonton and blocked production at a Suncor refinery upgrader near Fort McMurray were very effective and well organized.

RCMP officers were called in to help remove protesters and charges of mischief and break-and-enter were laid.

March says the company has always had security in place to keep trespassers out, primarily for safety reasons, but the latest incursions mean Canada’s biggest oil producer and refiner may have to rethink its strategies.
