Inquiry begins into man’s death in police custody

CALGARY — A fatality inquiry has begun into the death of a British Columbia man while in the custody of Calgary police.

Gordon Bowe, of Castlegar, B.C., was arrested in November 2008 after police found him in a home that was under construction.

A Taser was used during the arrest and a scuffle ensued.

An Alberta Serious Incident Response Team investigation exonerated police, calling the death a consequence of cocaine toxicity.

But John Chernenkoff, Bowe’s father-in-law, says someone needs to be held accountable.

The inquiry continues through Wednesday, then will adjourn until August.
