ARDROSSAN — A semi driver is dead after his single-tanker rig burst into flames following a collision with another semi east of Edmonton.

RCMP say a double-tanker rig had just merged onto Highway 16 Sunday afternoon when it was rear-ended by the single-tanker.

The second truck ended up in the median ditch and caught fire.

Cst. Wally Henry, a spokesman for the Strathcona County RCMP, says passersby tried to save the driver, but the intense heat drove them back.

The single-tanker wasn’t loaded, while the crude oil-laden double-tanker was not punctured and did not catch fire.

The name of the dead driver has not been released.
