Jiminez gets max fine from CFL

The CFL has come down hard on Jason Jimenez of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for his questionable hit on B.C. Lions defensive lineman Brent Johnson last week.

TORONTO — The CFL has come down hard on Jason Jimenez of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for his questionable hit on B.C. Lions defensive lineman Brent Johnson last week.

The league announced Wednesday it has slapped Jimenez with the highest fine allowed under the CFL’s collective bargaining agreement with the CFL Players’ Association for the hit. No financial details were divulged but a league source requesting anonymity said Jimenez was docked half of his game cheque for the incident.

As well, Jimenez will be required to attend a face-to-face meeting with CFL commissioner Mark Cohon to discuss the player’s on-field conduct.

The six-foot-three, 265-pound Johnson was jogging in the direction of the play during the game when the six-foot-seven, 320-pound Jimenez came in from behind and dived at Johnson’s left knee. Jimenez received a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty for his actions.

Johnson remained in the game but hasn’t practised this week and could see his consecutive games streak end at 161. The Lions take on the Calgary Stampeders this Saturday.

This isn’t the first time Jimenez has been involved in a controversial hit.

Three years ago as a member of the Lions he rolled into Calgary defensive lineman Anthony Gargiulo after the whistle during a game at B.C. Place. Gargiulo suffered a career-ending leg injury and Jimenez was slapped with a one-game suspension that was later overturned.
