Jr. Vipers slip past Wranglers

Also scoring for the Vipers, who trailed 3-1 after one period and 3-2 after 40 minutes, were Lee Fraser, Kolton Gillett, Ryan Traynor and Troy Klaus. Replying for the Wranglers were Karson French, Wyatt Fraser, Chance Abbott and Kyle Maas.

Jason Pohl turned aside 39 shots for Red Deer, while Blackfalds netminder Layne Swier made 22 saves. The Vipers were assessed seven of 10 minor penalties, with the Wranglers taking the lone misconduct.

The Vipers will host the Ponoka Stampeders tonight at 8 p.m. at the Arena.

In other Heritage League weekend games involving Central Alberta teams:

l Jordan Duthie scored twice in a losing cause Saturday as the host Stampeders dropped a 5-3 decision to the Mountainview Colts.

Klais deWaal also connected for the Stamps, while Garret Montour made 46 saves. Ponoka was outshot 51-21.

l The Stettler Lightning entertained the High River Flyers Saturday and came out on the short end of a 7-5 count.

Scoring for Stettler were Mitch Finkbiner with two goals, Orie Spearing, Landon Potter and Jacob Schwarzenberger. The Lightning got a 35-save outing from Landon Schmidt as each team managed 42 shots.

l At Rimbey, the host Rock fell 9-2 to the Banff Academy Bears Saturday. Details were unavailable.

l Calvin Main potted a pair of goals Friday to lead the Three Hills Thrashers to a 5-1 win over the host Airdrie Thunder.

Joel Harrison, Michal Stoetzel and Corbin Weston also tallied for the Thrashers, while netminder Cody Boeckman made 30 saves. Airdrie outshot Three Hills 31-25.

l The Wranglers were 6-2 winners over the host Okotoks Bisons Friday, getting two goals from each of Maas and French and singles from Jared Guilbault and Chance Abbott.

Tanner Schalin made 29 saves for the visitors, who held a 36-31 margin in shots.
