Jury chosen in baby murder case

The month long trial of a man charged with second-degree murder of a toddler was set to hear evidence today following jury selection on Monday in Red Deer Court of Queen’s Bench.

Evan Caswell Gilmer, 33, of Red Deer, is charged with killing 18-month-old Garth Leippi of Red Deer.

The infant was injured at a residence near 48th Avenue and 46th Street in Red Deer.

RCMP were called to the hospital on Oct. 12, 2008, after the injured boy was brought in by ambulance. He was taken by STARS air ambulance to a Calgary hospital and died the following day.

Gilmer, who was the boyfriend of the child’s mother, was charged in July 2009.
