Jury finds former teacher guilty of sex charge against Grade 9 student

A jury has found a former Saskatchewan teacher guilty of sexual exploitation of one of her Grade 9 students in the 1990s.

PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. — A jury has found a former Saskatchewan teacher guilty of sexual exploitation of one of her Grade 9 students in the 1990s.

Bonnie McLachlan wiped tears from her face after the verdict was read just before noon today.

The jury reached the verdict after two days of deliberations.

This was McLachlan’s second trial on the charge — she was acquitted in 2011, but the Crown appealed it and won.

McLachlan has been released until her sentencing hearing on Wednesday.

Some witnesses testified in the first trial that they saw McLachlan straddle the student in a hot tub during a school trip to Banff, Alta., in May 1994.

Several school officials testified they heard of concerns about McLachlan’s relationship with the student before the trip.
