Red Deer’s Darren Kinnear has taken another step toward playing professional lacrosse.

Kinnear, who was selected in the sixth round and 46th overall in the 2011 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft by the Calgary Roughnecks, signed a one-year contract, it was announced Monday.

The six-foot-two, 180-pound Kinnear played the last two seasons with the Edmonton Jr. Miners. He had 29 goals and 24 assists last season after notching 19 goals and 20 helpers his first year.

Kinnear, who is classified as a transition player, grew up playing minor lacrosse in Red Deer.

The Roughnecks open their 2012 season, Jan. 8 against the Toronto Rock. Their home opener is Jan. 21 against the Colorado Mammoth.
