The Lacombe Police Service is inviting citizens to vote on new curfew provisions being considered for the city’s Community Standards Bylaw.
An existing curfew bylaw needs to be revised as part of the new Community Standards Bylaw, which will also cover offences including bullying, graffiti, panhandling, noise and spitting or urinating in public, Police Chief Gary Leslie said in a press release this week.
The existing curfew affects children under 16 who are not accompanied by a “parent or lawful guardian” after 9:30 p.m. on weekdays and 10 p.m. on weekends.
Police want the time restriction to be changed so that the curfew will start at 1 a.m. and end at 6 a.m. and also want the wording expanded to include foster parents and any other person over 18 who has the care and control of a minor.
The Lacombe police also wants provisions to cover minors who are returning home from work or other sanctioned events, such as school, church, sports, cultural and recreational events, with a fine of $100 for a first offence and $200 for subsequent events to be charged to the parent or guardian.
