Lakers beat Raiders in final play of the game

Tyler Ledwos scored a punt single on the final play of the game as the Sylvan Lake H.J. Cody Lakers slipped past the visiting Lindsay Thurber Raiders 9-8 in Central Alberta High School Football League action Friday.

Elsewhere, the host Lacombe Rams blanked the Rocky Mountain House West Central Rebels 21-0.

The Lakers’ Brad Huhnold accounted for the game’s only touchdown on a 10-yard pass from quarterback Chase Hoffman, who completed eight of 21 attempts for 126 yards. Brandon Duthie converted the major.

Ledwos had a punt single to tie the game with 1:37 remaining, then added the winning point. Brody Slagman kicked two fields goals and added two punt singles for the Raiders.

Huhnold rushed for 131 yards on 19 carries and caught three balls for 36 yards. Ledwos hauled in four passes for a game-high 86 yards.

For the Raiders, Wilson Laugheed was five-for-17 passing for 76 yards and also led the visitors in rushing with 34 yards on seven carries.

At Lacombe, Sadair Nobel caught touchdown passes of 50 and 23 yards from quarterback Austin Ericson as the Rams rolled to victory. Darian Hippe hauled in a three-yard pass for a third Lacombe major and Ericson booted three converts.

Hippe led all rushers with 60 yards on eight carries. Jayden Jones added 32 yards on five trips, while Wayde Hodgen and Dylan Bowerstock rushed for 38 and 32 yards respectively for the Rebels.

Ericson completed six of 11 passes for 106 yards and teammate Judah Knip was good on two of six passes for 49 yards. Todd Wendt had two receptions for 90 yards.

Brayden Friesen was two-for-nine passing for West Central, which gained 54 yards through the air.
