Lane swim change protested

I decided to start lane swimming at the Red Deer Recreation Centre and the appeal was that they offered a 5:30 a.m. swim time five days a week and it is an exercise option that I not only love, but is affordable.

I decided to start lane swimming at the Red Deer Recreation Centre and the appeal was that they offered a 5:30 a.m. swim time five days a week and it is an exercise option that I not only love, but is affordable.

I am a single mom and I work full time. The only time that works for me to get out of the house to get any exercise is early morning.

The cashier at the Rec Centre advised us that effective April 1, the Rec Centre’s new lane swim time will be 6 a.m.

I was extremely disappointed to hear this as once the new start time goes into effect, I will have to give up the lane swimming since I need to be home by 6:30 a.m. to get my kids going for their day.

Based on the amount of people who are at the Rec Centre to take advantage of the early lane swim time, it surprises that me that they would want to change the time.

I know that personally, if they made the lane swim time 5 a.m., I would be there every single weekday morning to enjoy the benefits of a 45-minute to one-hour swim before having to head home to start my day.

Also, having been at the different pools at the different times of day, I know that I would not take part in the later lane swim times as they are too busy.

I would ask that the City of Red Deer reconsiders changing the times for the lane swim and if they do change the times, to make it earlier (5 a.m.) rather than later so that those of us who do work full time are able to get the exercise we need and enjoy.
