GRANDE PRAIRIE — The lawyer for a school sports coach charged with numerous sexual offences has entered a not guilty plea for his client.

Defence attorney Chris Millsap appeared in court Monday on behalf of the coach, whose identity and gender can’t be revealed under a publication ban.

Millsap said the accused has opted for a provincial court trial.

The person is charged with five counts of sexual assault, five counts of sexual exploitation and one count of sexual interference, stemming from allegations of three complainants.

Alberta Justice says most charges are alleged to have happened in the summer of 2009, while one count each of sexual assault and sexual exploitation allegedly occurred in the summer of 2006.

A trial date will be set May 17.

The accused is free on conditions, including that the individual not be in contact with the complainants, or any person under the age of 18, without another adult present.

The individual is allowed to leave the province of Alberta, but only to visit family in Saskatchewan and police must be notified first.

A publication ban also prevents reporting the complainants’ ages, genders, sports and schools.
