Taking part in a school-wide leadership day, Evan MacAulay, left, Denver Bysterveld and Janus Lundberg play along in a drum circle at Joseph Welsh Elementary School recently. Over the past four years, students and staff at the school have been following the seven habits of highly effective people as a way of developing character education and leadership skills. On this day, a variety of sessions kept the students and staff busy, including hockey, art, puppetry, dance, wrestling, curling, birdhouse building, sculpture, learning about first nations medicine wheels and others. All of the activities during the day had an underlying theme of developing understanding of others, appreciation of our world, positive leadership skills, goal setting, striving for dreams, self awareness, finding their own strengths and generally enhancing character development in all students.
