Library offers great variety, and a lesson in geography

Re: the Red Deer Public LibraryHaving a hankering for a smooth Eastwood western film with some ageless culture and underdog humour, I enquired about the DVD availability of The Outlaw Josey Wales. I was told it will be inter-library-loaned and delivered quite shortly. When the DVD arrived I noticed it was from Hays, Alta. Now here’s the thing: where is Hays?

Having a hankering for a smooth Eastwood western film with some ageless culture and underdog humour, I enquired about the DVD availability of The Outlaw Josey Wales. I was told it will be inter-library-loaned and delivered quite shortly. When the DVD arrived I noticed it was from Hays, Alta. Now here’s the thing: where is Hays?

Growing up a seasoned Albertan for almost 5O years, really western and really rode around, this question stumped me and most of my friends. (I didn’t ask them all!) It tickles me that a profound and somewhat jocular western had to be shipped from my unknown Hays Public Library Box 36!

It’s great to know the knowledgeable tentacles of library learning can slip around and dip into unfamiliar places and fish out DVDs or books. (I once got some Gestalt shipped up from the University of Lethbridge!)

Greater access to our book and film universe!

Thank you RDPL.

A friendly main floor entrance with an amazing kids hall on your right there, which is great to explore and learn if you’re a kid.

Next step up is the Mezz for blooming adolescence and the next step up for kids.

Then up to the newspaper/computer/study room for the final floor of the library learning experience.

A citizen and patron of the RDPL since the time of the original fire hall, this oasis of wisdom acquisition has facilitated a great use in our times and place. Thank you again!

I’ll leave you with a quote from a great Canadian fellow — well, he’s more than a fellow, he is Chief Dan George (from B.C.) who starred in this Hays-shipped flick, and I remember his advice: “Endeavour to persevere.”

P.S. Extensive research and communication helped me discover Hays is located northeast of Taber and Vauxhall.
