Liepert won’t run in spring election

EDMONTON — Alberta Finance Minister Ron Liepert is leaving politics.

EDMONTON — Alberta Finance Minister Ron Liepert is leaving politics.

Sources say the two-term legislature member has told the Progressive Conservative caucus he will not run in the next election, which is to be called in the spring.

Liepert, who represents voters in Calgary-West, has held a number of high-profile cabinet posts, including health and energy.

He was named finance minister by Premier Alison Redford when she took over the top job in October.

Liepert is known for a straight-shooting speaking style that some call refreshingly candid, but others see as destructively rude.

Raj Sherman, a former junior health minister under Liepert, was kicked out of the government caucus last year for saying, among other things, that Liepert’s brusque style had decimated morale among front-line health staff.
