Life-threatening injuries on 2A

One man is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after the pickup he was driving slammed into a garbage truck on Hwy 2A between Springbrook and Red Deer on Tuesday morning.

According to Cpl. Barry Larocque, Blackfalds RCMP, at approximately 6:30 a.m. an older pickup truck was travelling northbound on Hwy 2A and crossed the centre line into the southbound lane, striking the southbound garbage truck.

“When RCMP arrived on scene, EMS and fire from Red Deer had responded and the gentleman from the pickup was extracted and being worked on by EMS staff. Then they subsequently took him to the hospital,” Larocque said on Tuesday, noting that there was “extensive damage” to the pickup.

The man was transported by ground ambulance to the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre. The driver of the garbage truck was not injured.

“The last we heard the driver of the pickup is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries,” Larocque said. He was unsure of the exact injuries the pickup driver suffered.

Blackfalds RCMP are not sure what caused the accident and continue to investigate.

“The road conditions were fine, they were clear and dry so we’re not sure,” Larocque said.

The identity of the pickup driver is not being released at this time.
