GRANDE CACHE — A federal jail in northwestern Alberta has been locked down.

The lockdown at Grande Cache Institution began Wednesday after it was discovered that inmates may have had access to contraband items.

Prison guards were searching the penitentiary and all scheduled visits have been cancelled.

Arthur Ding, warden of the prison, said in a news release that the institution will remain on lockdown until it’s determined that “it is safe to return to normal routine.”

There are currently 242 male convicts in the prison — 117 minimum security and 125 medium security.
