Bowden Institution was locked down to conduct a search of the facility.

At about 12 p.m. on Monday the medium-security federal penitentiary, located south of Red Deer near Bowden, was put under lockdown so officials could conduct an ‘exceptional search’ of the institution.

According to the Correctional Service Canada, the search was conducted to ensure the ongoing safety and security of the institution, its staff and the inmates. The lockdown will be lifted and the institution will return to its normal routine when it is safe to do so.

In a press release the CSC said they are committed to preventing contraband items from entering its institutions. These efforts contribute towards ensuring a safe and secure environment for staff and inmates. Correctional Service Canada also works in partnership with law enforcement agencies to take action against those who attempt to have contraband brought into correctional institutions.
