Man accused in hostage-taking at school declared fit for trial

CALGARY — A court has been told that the suspect in a tense hostage-taking drama at a Calgary junior high school is fit to stand trial.

CALGARY — A court has been told that the suspect in a tense hostage-taking drama at a Calgary junior high school is fit to stand trial.

Provincial court Judge Jim Ogle received a letter from a forensic psychiatrist saying Matthew Akani Adeniran understands the legal process.

The trial has been set for June 7.

Adeniran, 25, was arrested in March following a stand-off at A.E. Cross junior high.

He allegedly held secretary Bonnie Grainger in a school office for two hours at knifepoint while frightened students were evacuated.

He faces several charges including forcible confinement, assault with a weapon, uttering threats, criminal harassment and possession of a weapon for a dangerous person.
