An Innisfail man arrested during an alleged assault at the CrossIron Mills mall near Balzac on Wednesday was already facing numerous charges from a previous incident in Vegreville.

The 55-year-old man, who is in custody at Calgary Remand Centre, appeared via closed-circuit TV in Vegreville provincial court on Monday to answer 15 new charges stemming from an alleged violent incident involving a woman from whom police say he recently separated.

The new charges, including house breaking with intent to commit an offence, sexual assault, kidnapping, and two counts of assaulting a police officer, follow on the heels of a March 15 incident involving the same woman.

Police were called to the mall after a member of the public was given a note by a woman saying she had been abducted.

Police allege that the accused became enraged when they arrived and attacked the victim, and then fought back when police officers tried to restrain him.

The accused, whose name cannot be released to protect the identity of his alleged victim, had been released on a recognizance on charges including sexual assault, assault, overcoming resistance, unlawful confinement, unlawful harassing or stalking and two counts of mischief.

He is to return to court in Vegreville on April 23 to enter a plea.
