EDMONTON — An Edmonton man who took part in a hate-motivated attack that saw a man blasted in the face with bear spray is going to jail.

EDMONTON — An Edmonton man who took part in a hate-motivated attack that saw a man blasted in the face with bear spray is going to jail.

Dylan Alfred Trommel, 23, was sentenced to 60 days in jail Wednesday after pleading guilty to a charge of criminal harassment.

Judge Robert Philp told Trommel his actions were evil and a “terrible thing to reflect on someone’s heritage, skin colour or creed.”

The judge said people should be free to walk around without being racially targeted.

Court heard 32-year-old Valentin Masepode, a student originally from Africa, was in a convenience store on Sept. 27 when he was confronted by Trommel and a woman.

Both called Masepode a racist term and taunted him, then he was hit in the face with bear spray.

The pair then fled, but were identified through the surveillance tape and arrested three months later.

Trommel told court he was sorry for what he had done.

“I was very intoxicated at the time and I apologize for my actions,” said Trommel. “It was a very stupid thing.”

Lacey Dawn Snyder, 22, is charged with criminal harassment, causing a disturbance, assault with a weapon, possession of an offensive weapon and mischief.

She is scheduled to be in court on May 18.
