BELLEVILLE, Ont. — A man who stowed away on a truck Thursday night for a quick ride across Toronto ended up going a lot farther than he expected.

A trucker called police in Belleville, Ont., to say he spotted a man in his rear-view mirror waving at him from between the cab and trailer.

The stowaway jumped off the rig once it stopped and asked the driver how he could get back to Toronto — about 200 kilometres to the west.

Police say it appears the stowaway had hopped on the rig to visit friends in Toronto but when the truck hit Highway 401, he was unable to get off.

Officers made arrangements for a relative to pick him up and return him to east-end Toronto.

The man’s name and age were not released.
