Man in Edmonton dead after being shot by police during traffic stop

A man who was shot by Edmonton police after an apparent confrontation during a traffic stop has died.

EDMONTON — A man who was shot by Edmonton police after an apparent confrontation during a traffic stop has died.

Police say the man was shot twice when he allegedly threatened two officers.

Chad Orydzuk, a police spokesman, says the shooting happened around 12:30 a.m.

Orydzuk says the man was taken to hospital in “serious condition” and died sometime after 4.

Police had reportedly been looking for someone described as distraught when they stopped a man in his vehicle behind an apartment building on the city’s west side.

Investigators say the male driver got out and was carrying some type of weapon when one of the officers opened fire.

Neither officer was injured.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, which investigates police shootings, is now in charge of the investigation.
