An unidentified man is being treated for a broken leg after being pinned in equipment on a small rig at about 4:40 p.m. on Thursday.

Tracey Kipta, communications officer with Occupational Health and Safety, said the man suffered a broken leg while working on small derrick set up at the Predator Drilling yard in Clearview Industrial Park, just south of Red Deer.

Kipta did not know the full extent of the man’s injury.

Occupational Health and Safety has shut down the rig to conduct an investigation, which will look into potential factors such as equipment failure, weather and operational errors. The injured worker will also be tested to determine if there was a medical factor or impairment involved.

It could be a number of months before they are able to determine the cause of the injury and whether there will be any charges.
