The May long weekend has just started in the West Country but already an off-road vehicle fatality has occurred.

Rocky Mountain House RCMP said on Friday that at about 11:20 p.m. on Thursday, they received a report of a quad rollover southwest of Chambers Creek campground, which is about 30 km west of Rocky.

A group of men were quadding on a trail near their camp when one of the men failed to negotiate a trail and fell about five to six metres. The 33-year-old man’s quad rolled on top of him, causing severe injuries. He was not wearing a helmet.

Upon arrival, his friends attempted CPR until emergency services arrived. The man was pronounced dead by Emergency Medical Services.

His identity is not being released and Rocky and District Victim Services is providing assistance to his family and friends.

RCMP said alcohol is believed to be a factor in the incident.

Clearwater Fire Services and Rocky Search and Rescue also attended the scene. Rocky RCMP, along with the Calgary Medical Examiner’s office, will continue to investigate.

Police remind everyone to wear approved safety equipment while operating off-road vehicles, and operating any type of vehicle while under the influence of drugs and alcohol is a criminal offence.
