CALGARY — A man suffered minor injuries but is facing charges after a vehicle he was driving plunged over a 60-metre embankment into a ravine.

The vehicle had been the object of brief overnight pursuits involving both the RCMP and city police.

Calgary police duty inspector Darren Cave says Mounties stopped a suspected drunk driver near Chestermere, east of the city.

Cave says while the driver was in the cruiser, a 38-year-old male passenger who was in the stopped vehicle jumped behind the wheel and sped away.

RCMP gave chase but gave up and notified Calgary police, who were unable to stop the vehicle after spotting it within city limits.

Cave says the vehicle was located some time later and when the driver saw police, he tried to flee but plunged over the embankment.
