An armed man has been shot and killed by RCMP who had been called to check out a domestic disturbance at an apartment building.

ONOWAY — An armed man has been shot and killed by RCMP who had been called to check out a domestic disturbance at an apartment building.

Two officers from the Stony Plain detachment west of Edmonton were called to the building in Onoway on Wednesday night.

Mounties said the members were confronted by a man with an edged weapon.

“During the course of dealing with the male, shots were fired,” Clifton Purvis, executive director of the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, better known as ASIRT, said Thursday.

“EMS workers provided medical treatment on scene; however, the male died on scene as a result of the injuries he received.”

Purvis said ASIRT is investigating the shooting.

RCMP said the officers weren’t injured.
