Martial arts studio allowed to operate at site for three years

A martial arts studio has received municipal approval to temporarily operate out of the 5237 54th Ave. building that once housed Allsports Replay. On Wednesday, Red Deer’s municipal planning commission authorized Arashi-Do Martial Arts to use the main floor of the premises for three years. In February 2010, the commission agreed to allow the Central Alberta Archers Association to operate on the second floor of the building, which dates back more than 50 years.

Originally constructed as a warehouse, the structure has been used as a industrial rental facility and motorcycle repair shop. Allsports Replay, which bought and sold sporting goods equipment, used it from 1991 until about 2 1/2 years ago. The property is located within the Railyards district of the Red Deer’s Greater Downtown Action Plan, which calls for the eventual development of a distinctive urban neighbourhood there. A formal area redevelopment plan for the district has yet to be completed.
