McIver, Prentice pick up nomination forms to launch Alberta PC leadership race

EDMONTON — The race has officially begun for Alberta’s governing Progressive Conservatives.

Candidates Jim Prentice and Ric McIver picked up their nomination forms and are now collecting signatures in order to be accepted into the contest.

Nominations close at the end of the month and all candidates will be introduced at a forum in Edmonton on June 2.

Prentice, a former federal cabinet minister and Calgary MP, is considered the front runner.

Fourteen Tory MLAs have already publicly endorsed him.

McIver, a Calgary MLA and former infrastructure minister, is promising to run a populist campaign intended to eradicate the spending scandals that helped bring down former premier Alison Redford.
