A public memorial service will be held for Master Cpl. Byron Greff on Monday at 1 p.m. at Canadian University College in Lacombe.

Greff, a Edmonton-based solider who grew up in Lacombe, died on Oct. 29 in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Greff’s body arrived home in Lacombe on Friday in a procession of vehicles with flashing lights and siren that included Lacombe city and county police, RCMP, EMS ambulances and fire trucks stretching about three blocks.

City officers outside the Lacombe Police Station on 50th Avenue saluted the procession as it passed by.

Greff, 28, is survived by his wife Lindsay Rafael, and their son Keller and new-born daughter Brielle.

A candlelight vigil for Greff was held at Lest We Forget Park at Lacombe Memorial Centre Gardens on Friday night.

Greff was on a routine trip between training and headquarters bases when a car packed with explosives rammed into a heavily armoured NATO bus know as a Rhino. It had been escorted by two heavily-armed patrol vehicles.

Greff, a member of Third Battalion of Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, was the first Canadian to die in Afghanistan since the combat mission ended in July.

Five NATO soldiers, eight civilian contractors and four Afghans were killed in the blast, and many others were wounded.

Greff will be laid to rest in a private family interment at Fairview Cemetery in Lacombe on Monday morning.

Canadian University College is located at 5415 College Ave.
