Minor Hockey: IROC Chiefs split pair

The IROC Chiefs split a pair of weekend contests, dumping the North Star Chiefs 10-2 in an all-Red Deer battle and falling 6-3 to the AC Avalance at Cochrane.

Minor midget AAA

The IROC Chiefs split a pair of weekend contests, dumping the North Star Chiefs 10-2 in an all-Red Deer battle and falling 6-3 to the AC Avalance at Cochrane.

Jody Sick fired two goals against North Star, with Ryker Leer scoring twice for IROC and Kirk Johnson, Eric Moltzahn, Spencer Yeats and Dustin Gorgi also connecting. Matt Zentner faced 34 shots for the win.

North Star snipers were Scott Ferguson and Tom Vanderlinde. Brett Frisneth and Anthony Hamill faced a combined 27 shots in a losing cause.

Sick scored twice and Jacob Schofield once in the loss at Cochrane. Logan Muir made 26 saves for the Chiefs, who held a 39-32 advantage in shots.

Midget

The Red Deer Elks racked up a pair of AA road wins, beating the Wheatland Chiefs 4-1 and downing the Brooks Storm 5-2.

Tanner Howe, Joel Scheelar, Justin Moltzahn and Mitch Lightbown scored against Wheatland, while winning goalie Dasan Sydora stopped 38 shots.

Scoring against the Storm were Nick Keoughan, Alex Randell, Tanner Lomsnes, Brock Forbes and Moltzahn. Davis Reykdal faced 19 shots in picking up the win.

Meanwhile, the Red Deer ProStitch Chiefs got a 34-save outing from Brady Nydokus in a 5-4 win over the host Okotoks Oilers. Zac Bouw, Clayton Swan, Brendan Dennis, Jordan Pratt and Tyler Cassidy scored for ProStitch.

Midget Girls

The Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs enjoyed a lucravtive weekend in A action, winning a trio of contests while allowing just a single goal.

Included was a 4-1 victory over Leduc in the second game of a provincial playoff series. Marianne Currie, Hayey Cramer, Taylor Henzlmeir and Haley Poch scored for the Chiefs, who advanced to the provincial championship tournament March 25-28 in Spruce Grove.

Sutter Fund also posted 5-0 and 4-0 wins over the Lacombe Rockets and Sylvan Lake Lakers.

Currie fired four goals against the Rockets, while Whitney Sveinson potted the other Chiefs goal and Elissa Spiegelmann posted the shutout.

Poch, Chelsey Weatherill and Beatiz Landaverde, with two goals, pulled the trigger against Sylvan Lake. Nora Drechsler recorded the shutout.

Bantam Girls

Wendy Bell, Jade Lee and Raina Turnbull scored for the Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs in a 5-3 Alberta Major League loss to the visiting Calgary Outlaws.

Carissa Fischer made 45 saves for Sutter Fund.

Peewee

The Red Deer TBS Chiefs closed out their regular-season AA schedule with a win and a loss during the weekend.

Parker Smyth recorded a hat trick and Tyler Graber scored twice in an 8-4 victory over the Lethbridge Hurricanes. Brady Park, Ryan Vandervlis and Kyle Gibson rounded out the TBS scoring, while Klayton Sandquist made 25 saves.

In a 6-5 loss to the Medicine Hat Venom, Graber, Park, Ryan Nielsen, Jordan Muirhead and Landon MacKenzie each tallied once for the Chiefs, who got a 26-save effort from Josh King.

Atom

Cooper Jones and Josh Tarzwell each tallied twice as the Red Deer KFC Chiefs downed the Sylvan Lake Lakers 8-2 in AA play.

Levi Amundson, Hunter Marchildon, Hunter Leslie and Connor Dawes sniped singles for the Chiefs, while Devin Carroll stopped 30 shots.

Austin Gallant and Brett Porter replied for the Lakers. Brayden Laturnus made 28 saves in defeat.

KFC also dropped a 4-2 decision to the Red Deer Sports World Chiefs, who got a pair of goals from Tye Carriere and single sfrom Kaiden Kanderka and Eric Moore. Amundson and Jeramie Kohut scored for KFC.

Winning netminder Joshua Anderson faced only 14 shots. Carroll and Eric Johnson combined to make 25 saves at the other end.
