Mobile dialysis unit sitting idle

LAC LA BICHE — A mobile kidney dialysis unit to improve access to care for patients in some rural areas of Alberta is sitting idle because not enough staff can be found to operate it.

LAC LA BICHE — A mobile kidney dialysis unit to improve access to care for patients in some rural areas of Alberta is sitting idle because not enough staff can be found to operate it.

The bus-based unit — announced two years ago by the provincial government — is assigned to the community of Lac La Biche.

Jeff Foster, a spokesman for Alberta Health Services, says job postings that have been up in the community since the spring have not proven successful.

Tom MacCagno, a Lac La Biche resident, says it’s fundamentally wrong that he’s forced to drive several hours each week to St. Paul for dialysis.
