SHERWOOD PARK — An RCMP officer is recovering after she was allegedly punched in the face by a man who refused to identify himself during a traffic stop near Edmonton.

Mounties say around midnight, the officer and her partner pulled over a sport utility vehicle with a burned-out headlight near Sherwood Park.

They say the driver refused to give his name and was about to be arrested when he allegedly struck the officer and sped away in his vehicle to Edmonton.

He crashed into a bus bench in the city and fled on foot, but was tracked down to a back yard several blocks away.

The man was turned over to the RCMP to face multiple charges.
