SHAUGHNESSY — Major crimes investigators were probing the death of a man in Shaughnessy, Alta., on Wednesday after neighbours alerted police to early-morning gunfire.

RCMP found the body of a man in his mid-20s in the back alley, and questioned other occupants of a small home.

There’s a tentative identification of the shooting victim, police say, but no name will be released until verified by a medical examiner in Calgary.

Officers initially responded to a gunfire complaint called into the Picture Butte detachment about 1 a.m., said Sgt. Patrick Webb.

Police detained residents of the small bungalow, and then found the body outside. An RCMP canine unit from Lethbridge and a forensic identification section were called to the scene, along with major crimes officers from Lethbridge and Calgary.

The older home, on the village’s north side, was cordoned off overnight. Four vehicles in the driveway were inside the police tape, along with a mini-van parked across the sidewalk.

Neighbours who did not wish to be identified indicated the victim may have been one of several Mexican Mennonite farm workers living in the home. All were in their 20s or 30s, they said.

Residents said the newcomers had lived quietly since moving to Shaughnessy within the last year or so.
