Mounties to get armoured vehicles

EDMONTON — RCMP officers in Alberta will have three heavily armoured tactical vehicles at their disposal when dealing with high-risk situations.

EDMONTON — RCMP officers in Alberta will have three heavily armoured tactical vehicles at their disposal when dealing with high-risk situations.

Reports on two Alberta radio stations (CHED, CHQR) say the specially designed vehicles will be assigned to the Mounties’ emergency response teams in the province.

The reports cite an internal memo from Assistant Commissioner Marianne Ryan of the RCMP’s Edmonton-based K Division, who says the new equipment will bolster the division’s tactical operations.

The memo also says the vehicles will enhance the safety of officers involved in critical incidents.

Plans are also underway to establish full-time RCMP tactical teams in Edmonton and Calgary.

The acquisition comes seven years after four RCMP officers were killed by a lone gunman as they were guarding a marijuana grow operation and auto chop shop that had been discovered near Mayerthorpe.
