MS group shuffles services as fundraising slips

The Central Alberta chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada has been forced to shuffle some of its services after participation faltered in two of the chapter’s largest summer campaigns.

The Central Alberta chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada has been forced to shuffle some of its services after participation faltered in two of the chapter’s largest summer campaigns.

The 2011 Enerflex MS Walk in May collected $142,000 in pledges compared to the $187,000 raised in 2010.

The 2011 Rona MS Bike Tour in June drew in $99,000 compared to $135,489 raised last year.

Bre Fitzpatrick, development co-ordinator, said the fewer fundraising dollars will no doubt affect some of the services but the chapter will reduce the impact by being creative in fundraising through grant writing and re-prioritizing spending.

“One thing we are adamant about for our clients is that we are here for advocacy and support, be it financial or emotional,” she said.

“Services to our clients will be the last avenue we will look at cutting with lack of funding.”

Fitzpatrick said clients should not be concerned.

She said those who need the most urgent help with services will be helped right away but there will be situations where they will not be able to help people or only to help with partial funding.

Between 3,000 and 4,000 people, including family and friends, access services at the local chapter each year.

The chapter helps many Central Albertans with advocacy for funding for things like a new wheelchair or a lift at their home. They offer support, educational workshops and social events.

“There are ways to making it work and that’s what we will be looking to,” said Fitzpatrick. “We are very grateful for the continued support in Central Alberta. The continued support helps us get one step closer to finding that answer. That’s the tone we want to find with everyone. We do believe we will find a cure.”

Money is still coming in from the two events.
