Municipality lifts state of emergency in fire area

A state of emergency has been lifted in east-central Alberta where a fire had forced 12 families from their homes.

EDMONTON — A state of emergency has been lifted in east-central Alberta where a fire had forced 12 families from their homes.

The Municipal District of Bonnyville says there is no longer any risk to residents in the Forsythe Lake area.

They were allowed to return to their homes Wednesday afternoon.

Another fire in the municipality — near Muriel Lake south of Bonnyville — has been put out.

There are about 40 fires burning in the province with one considered out of control.

Firefighters should be getting some help from the weather: cool temperatures and rain are forecast for the next several days.

On Thursday, officials in the Lac La Biche area said the largest of their four wildfires is being held at 10 square kilometres.

A fire ban is in place for forested lands in Alberta, from Waterton Lakes National Park to north of Manning and east to north of Fort McMurray.
