NORTH RIVER, N.L. — A man in southeastern Newfoundland has found a live military shell that dates back to 1900.
The RCMP says the man in North River, N.L., on the Avalon Peninsula, contacted them Thursday after discovering the piece of military ordnance.
An explosives disposal unit went to his house and confirmed that the 21-kilogram piece of ordnance, possibly of British origin, was capable of penetrating large armour.
Officers say the shell is still live, despite its age and rusted condition.
Police say the shell was safely removed from the man’s house and will be destroyed over the weekend.
