The RCMP is holding its annual Name the Foal contest in order to name the next batch of baby horses that could be a part of their traditional Musical Ride.

The six foals will be born this spring at the RCMP breeding farm in Pakenham, Ont.

The RCMP Musical Ride tours throughout Canada and abroad, performing at 40 to 50 locations a year between the months of May and October. Thirty-six riders and 36 horses are involved in the Musical Ride — a famous performance of a cavalry drills, choreographed to music.

Children under 14 are being asked to choose a name for the horses, beginning with the letter “J.” The name must be six letters or less.

Individual or school class entries will be accepted no later than July 9.

People are encouraged to submit their entry online at www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca. Entries will also be accepted through mail, post-marked no later than July 3, to The Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s Musical Ride Branch c/o RCMP Name the Foal Contest PO Box 8900 Ottawa, Ont., K1G 3J2.

Remember to include the entrant (or school) name, age, address and phone number, along with the idea for the foal’s name.

The winning names will be posted on the RCMP website in September.

Prizes are up for grabs.
