Nativity scene defaced by vandals

The First Baptist Church nativity scene was likely defaced during a recent vandalism spree on the weekend.

Audrey Schwartz, church secretary, said the Christmas scene on 39th Street was vandalized with red and black markings similar to those that were found on the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Deer Park Alliance Church and CrossRoads Church on Sunday.

“It was totally defaced with swastikas and other things that were not nice,” said Schwartz. “I think it was done in the same spree. The head of the shepherd was knocked off. There was lots of spray paint.”

Schwartz said church volunteers repaired and repainted earlier this week. Churchgoers to the four churches discovered the damage on Sunday before the morning church services. Police were notified in all cases.
