EDMONTON — Veteran peacekeeper Don Ethell will officially take command of the Alberta legislature next week.

The retired colonel will become the province’s 17th lieutenant-governor in a ceremony at the legislature May 11.

Ethell served on 14 peacekeeping missions in places such as Cyprus, Syria, Jordan, Israel and Lebanon.

He replaces the retiring Norman Kwong.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the selection of Ethell last month.

Ethell’s new job as the Queen’s representative will be to sign bills into law and open and close each legislative session.
