COCHRANE— Nanook’s new boot is made for walkin’ and that’s just what the two-year-old dog is doing despite a serious leg injury.
Veterinarian Jody McMurray says Nanook, a collie-German shepherd mix, hasn’t had any problems getting around since he was fitted with the boot about a month ago.
The mutt was turned over to the Cochrane and Area Humane Society west of Calgary in February with a bad gunshot wound to his rear hind leg.
“We thought we were going to have to amputate but he’s a trooper,” said McMurray.
Several tricky surgeries saved Nanook’s leg, but he was unable to walk on the pad of the damaged limb.
A veterinary orthopedist in Calgary suggested a solution — a unique boot from the U.S. that pulls up on the paw.
“We ordered it and it works like a charm,” McMurray said.
